John, there are a myriad of ways to receive weather fax of which
several can use your computer. I will miss some and I am sure others
can add.

First, the authoritative source of information with respect to
weather fax is free. Marius Rensen a HAM radio operator and radio
frequency fax expert has had a www site for several years where
virtually everything with respect to RFFAX can be found. The site is
so good the USCG references it rather than try and keep up with
stations and frequencies world wide. Spend some time here:

There are free software downloads on the site which can be used in
conjuntion with your PC to receive fax. There are also free designs
allowing you to put together a modulator allowing you to connect your
PC to an HF radio.

I have used software and a modulator from an Aussie fellow Jonathan
Selby who has a small company Xaxero. It was the best for a long
time but is dated now. However, the price recommends it. I think it
sells for $100. Go to:

IMHO the best systems available are OCENS at:

I have one of these in operation now and the sensitivity is amazing.
They are pricey.

There is also a product which really looks awsome from RayMarine that
allows fax and satellite to be overwritten on electronic charts. It
was originally developed in Australia but Raytheon purchased it a
couple of years ago and integrated it with their systems.

Last but not least on my list is the old standby WEFX from Furano.
This is a dedicated weather fax with a thermal printer. Old but
still serviceable. These can be found at West Marine.
