Actually he pitch poled on his first attempt to round the cape. He limped back to
port and repaired the vessel for another attempt. He pitch poled again at about
the same location. He was towing warps both times. He then repaired again and
attempted a third time. (you gota give this guy credit for being persistent or
something) He made it around on the third attempt only to meet the storm in the
south Pacific while still in the 40's. He began by towing warps but realized his
boat was in big trouble so he cut the warps and his technique was born. I also
would find it hard to hand steer for so long. However given the situation decried
adrenaline might help me do it.
