I have just finished studying The Pardeys book(let) about Storm Tactics.
They draw on their own experience and augment their conclusions from the
experience of many cruisers they met and talked to.
It is an excellent study and is a must buy. IMO of course.
Briefly, they state that running before a storm is the most dangerous tactic
to adopt and should be avoided. Lying ahull is not as dangerous as running
before, but is a game of roulette while waiting for that sequence of events
that will overpower the yacht. Heaving-to is the better tactic and they use
that tactic constantly in both strong and medium winds. When the weather
becomes dangerous, they update from heaving-to to setting a para-anchor
because heaving-to alone does not completely stop the yacht and she tends to
sail out of the protective slick. The para-anchor properly adjusted
(details in the book) will hold the yacht in the slick of the para-anchor so
she lies comfortably.
But you must buy the book, it is the best I have ever read, and I am sure it
will convince you.
