=why would anyone allow a complete stranger, in a remote place, to come
=aboard.

The obvious answer is surprise and complacency.
Surprise. Those who will take advantage of you will have four things in
common. 1. They know what they want. 2. They know how they're going to
get it. 3. They know what they're willing to do to get it. 4. And
they'll usually get it with your assistance: friendship, need, assistance,
openness or greed. No matter how well armed you are, you'll never be ready
because you're complacent.
Complacency. Even secluded anchorages are pretty busy with local
traffic--the curious, those wanting to sell you something, those wanting to
trade, not to mention your cruising neighbors, come by all the time. Like
it or not, in many cultures cruising boats are the main social attraction in
an otherwise pretty dull existence as well as an important source of income
for many families.
Even if you carry a gun aboard, what are you going to do? Greet every boat
load of fisherman wanting to sell you a lobster with a pistol? Draw a bead
on every proa full of women selling handcrafts in case they have M-16s under
their grass skirts? Cover every dugout with teens selling tropical fruit
with a gun in your hand? Fire warning shots to warn away the curious as
they paddle out to greet you? If that's one's approach to cultural
interaction while cruising, you might as well stay home.
Fortunately, these kinds of armed encounters are so exceedingly rare that
you almost never hear of them. The fact that they are so rare makes them
news.
