Yes, it is a shame, but without trying to 2nd guess anything or anybody,
why would anyone allow a complete stranger, in a remote place, to come
aboard.
Personally, if a complete stranger tried that with me, I'd drop a 25 mm
flare shell in the their gut before they knew what hit them, and ask
questions later.
Maybe I've spent too many years in big cities, and too much time selling
products to a pretty "rough and ready" bunch of people.
It has probably given me a pretty jaundiced outlook on my fellow man.
But, if the poor SOB dies of thirst, that's his problem, not mine, at
least until I get to know them.
Just my $0.02.
