=that suggests that lying ahull is NOT a good idea.

I wondered the same thing, Bryan. But I really couldn't tell from the story
whether he was lying ahull or if he was running under bare poles,
particularly since he was pooped, rolled and then pitchpoled--according to
how I read the story. I know of anecdotal evidence of people who get away
with lying ahull (and as you point out, a number who didn't), but I don't
know of any long term voyagers who do it or recommend it.

On the other hand, I think which storm tactic you choose has a lot to do
with wave shape, speed and height, the nearness of shore, and the weight and
shape of the underbody of your boat.

Still, I'm pretty convinced that regardless of tactic there may be
conditions where you're luck just craps out and despite your own best
efforts your boat end up at the exact point out of millions of sq miles of
ocean where some weird combination of wave trains, current, wind and bottom
contour all come together to make mess out of your life.

Like you, I certainly wouldn't second guess the guy, particular based on a
newspaper story, which was probably written by a non-sailor based on a
telephone interview.

You can see a pix and read the story in the Hilton Head paper here:
