Philip,

Thank you for an astute introspective. I was not aware of the danger in the
Caribbean Sea until you mentioned it.

I don't know about others, but I find I must always be on guard against
complacency -- the cause of most disasters, marine and otherwise. I own an
old rigging book, "Understanding Rigs and Rigging," in which there is a photo
of the author. He is holding a sign which says "Constant Vigilance." I long
ago adopted this as my watchword when sailing, but I find I must remind
myself of it daily, and even more often, at times.

Rogues, like fast ships are a hazard that we all have to live with when we
travel on the sea, just as downbursts and other atmospheric phenomena
sometimes affect air travelers. I have always been awed by the fact that
waters some 400 meters deep are "shallow" with respect to wave generation,
and that large waves can and do appear out of "nowhere."

here's a good example:

and here's a good site, with links:
http://www.ifremer.fr/metocean/vagues_scelerates1.htm

I'd be interested in any other sites you come across.
