Thank you all for your responses. As Dave has surmised I have an ulterior motive. For 25 years I have been running courses in the UK for the various grades of cruising (day sailing, offshore and ocean). I have written a series of course manuals which I try to keep up-to-date. Having more time these days to sit on the taffrail and listen to other peoples ideas, I like to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Heavy Weather Sailing (Adlard Coles/Peter Bruce) is well recommended as a publication to take on passage.

A particular concern of mine has been waves particularly the possibility of rogue waves. Strong winds represent no danger in themselves but the waves they create can cause problems particularly when augmented by other factors. At the continental shelf to the west of Europe the depth of water goes from 4000 metres to 150 metres in a distance of 50 miles. With the normal east-west tidal oscillation, this change of depth is a very efficient wave generator. The trade winds in the Caribbean create waves which are augmented passing between the Windward Islands. These wave patterns fan out beyond the islands and, where they interact, the sea state can become confused and dangerous. We are all familiar with wind against tide situations. These instances, and numerous others, need to be assiduously avoided in heavy weather. The above publication discusses them in some detail, but I have yet to find a good publication on the creation of rogue waves.

Are there any decent websites for ocean navigators? In European waters two good websites for weather are www.franksingleton.clara.net and www.meteo.fr/naviweb/
