Philip, I have no idea how many kilo's of books we have aboard but it
is a lot. Last year I went through the library and send a huge pile
to the local books swap in Grenada. There were sailors grabbing from
the pile before I had turned around. The short answer is anything
and everything that you enjoy reading. However, that said and done
my essential list is:
Admiralty List of Radio Signals
DMA/NIMA 001 – Chart Symbology
Admiralty Sailing Directions for appropriate area
Weather Predicting Simplified – Michael Carr – this is the best book
there is on marine weather.
Drug Almanac – purchase a new one annually, huge thick tomb that list
all medications, useage, dose, allergeric reactions etc.
The Ships Captains Medical Guide
International Medical Guide for Ships
A Gentlemens Guide to Passages South, the Thornless Path - Van Sant -
best book there is for the US East to Caribbean Cruiser and great for
all others.
Current and appropriate Reeds Almanac
Celestial Tables HO229 or 249 as appropriate
Oxford Dictionary of Ships and the Sea – this solves many sundowner
arguments and is also good reading although dated.
The Boat Who Wouldn't Float – Farley Mowatt – read it 20 times and
still pee myself laughing.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – Robert M Pursig – what
does this have to do with sailing you ask? If you have read it you
know if not read it and see.
Bowditch – it helps balance the boat and at $20.00 is the best buy
there is.
The Joy Of Cooking – old edition – the new and improved is a
disaster. The new one has recipes for bean sprouts and tofu.
Two Years Before the Mast – Dana
Volvo Shop Manual
I forget the title but it is a small European publication with a 10
language dictionary of all the translations you will need when
sailing in half the world. Perhaps you know it.
Now you have to let me know why you asked. Let us know what the
concensus is and the entire list. Thanks.
