G'day

Re the insults etc. There is NEVER any excuse for rudeness but there are intolerant people everywhere. They may be a pain in the you-know-what, but as blunt as the info is given it sometimes has an equally blunt bottom line...maybe...you have to work it out for yourself.

People's advice is often flavoured by their own experiences...or lack of it... I once completed a comprehensive refit on my boat in a sailing club yard. No matter what the topic, I have found you are ALWAYS going to get differences in opinions from 'experts'...some of whom had never even owned a boat! :)

I learned that I should listen, think about it, read about it, compare it, and come up with an answer that only me, myself and I was comfortable with...then I could only blame myself if something failed on me. It is a bad mistake to rely completely on other peoples advice or even professional tradesmen for that matter...seek, listen, learn, decide.

When someone recently asked me about buying a boat, I thought about it then asked him 'what do REALLY want to DO with it'? like... where do you want to go, how often, how long... to think about it a bit and get rid of the stars out of the eyes before actually starting to look around. I reckon once aa new boat buyer has considered this, their shopping list will be much more specific.

And they should be prepared to compromise. You'll simply never find the ideal boat for what you want. If there's just one thing I had to point to, I'd say don't compromise on a boats sea handling ability. Everything else can fail, but at the end of the day, you've gotta stay afloat.

To each his/her own...

Cheers,

  Nolen:
I agree, the insult was uncalled for. Capable people are sometimes
intolerant. There are lots of good boats in the 40' range, your budget and
interests will play a major part in your choice. My wife, ex-girlfriend,
started out with no sailing experience or talent and has become a really
good first mate with great sailing instincts and capabilities. Never
underestimate a motivated person, male or female.
