I own a C22. Best thing I could have done at that point in my life.
It got me out sailing, weekly at worst, daily sometimes.
And a good friend of mine told me to make your big mistakes on a small
boat.
And that I did. Learned a lot of what not to do, and built up some good
experience with boat
maintenance.

It is a fin keel (mine was a swing keel) so it points well, but it won't
hold a course for 5 seconds
without an autopilot. The motor was a 6hp outboard, easy maintenance,
easy to pull off and take to
the shop, little problems with motor noise inside. But you have to store
the gas tank somewhere, and
anywhere inside a C22 is in the cabin, so there are gas fumes in the
cabin on hot days. Ventilate
WELL before lighting a candle, or stove.

It is a small boat, mine was a pop top, but I rarely put the top up, and
therefore I almost never
stood up inside the boat. I put a bimini on the cockpit, and therefore
almost never stood up in the
cockpit. Translation, 5 day cruise = chiropractor visit.

But I learned a LOT about sailing, and I learned a lot about what kind
of boat I want. I want to
cruise, not race, not day sail. A weekend seems to be minimum for me.
And I need a sail at least
once a month or I start twitching uncontrollably. I also learned that
the C22 was not a cruiser, and
no matter what I added to her she wouldn't be a real cruiser. So I'm in
the market for a cruising
boat that I can pay off in 5 years. Small boat, and a suitcase
scenario.

It you are in the same position I was, not sure of what you REALLY want,
and if you haven't done boat
maintenance yourself, but would like to, and if you are looking to
improve your sailing skills then
the C22 could be a good boat for you. They are relatively inexpensive,
trailerable (more access to
different waters), and there is a huge amount of information available
on them. There are many
projects you can undertake with lots of advise from the net.

If you want to race. The C22 has quit a following. There are even one
class races set up all over
the US for C22 sailors. And the C22 can be rated for most other races.
She has a short waterline,
but for her size she is quit fast and nimble to boot. And if you have
the deep keel, or the swing
keel (down) you can carry an amazing amount of sail.

I hope this helps you decide if the C22 is for you or not. If you have
questions, you can E-mail me
off-line and I'd be happy to answer them.
