When I asked for others OPINIONS on why they like a particular boat or why they dislike a particular boat, I get a response telling me I should "sharpen my experiences". I don't own a Hunter, I have not sailed a Hunter and I don't build boats. I think it to be quite appropriate to ask why I should steer clear of a Hunter.

If I had asked the question, I wouldn't have said I was a capable sailor,
nor would I put "Capt" in my From line of my post and I would have gotten a
more polite (although possibly more patronizing) response. That's what
people were reacting to. In order to truly be a Captain (other than in the
Army maybe), one has certain tests that one must pass, and experience that
one must have.

There are a lot of people on the internet that try to pretend that they are
something that they are not. Sometimes these people seem to get a kick out
of stirring up controversy. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish them from
the people who are just clueless.

It is generally a bad idea to ask a group like this what boats they would
recommend. If we own boats, we are probably violently partisan about them
- there's a lot of prejudice among boat owners.

Although I agree that they should be that rude. If you had asked whether
you should buy a power boat or a sailboat, you'd probably have gotten even
more explosive reactions.

>Again, tell me when I asked for commentary on who I shall bring aboard or whether to "take this troll someplace else"? Is this type of list I have subscribed to? Can I expect more of this type of response to questions?

This list isn't the best for this type of question. It isn't seen as a
serious question because if you had the type of experience you seem to be
trying to say that you have, you WOULD know, or have some better idea of
what you needed.

But anyway, here's my opinion FWIW.

If you are living in south FL, there isn't much place to sail unless you
are up in the Indian River area (not offshore) or fairly far down in the
Keys. In the Keys (or the west coast), unless you have a pretty shallow
draft, you are going to be restricted to the Hawk Channel, and there's
virtually no place to anchor along there until you get down to Boot Key
Harbor (Marathon). The Gulf coast is also pretty shallow.

If you are talking about going to the Bahamas for a 3 day weekend, forget
it. A sailboat is too slow for that to be an option. It will take you the
most part of 24 hours to get there and ditto to get back. All you'd be
able to do is rest up for the return trip. If that's what you would like
to do, a power boat (and I don't mean a trawler) is much more practical.

I also think a 40 foot boat is too large to easily single-hand, although it
can be done. The problem for single handers is not just the sailing part
(although if you go more than about 12 hours, standing watches gets hard),
but the starting and stopping part. If your girlfriend is not physically
challenged (this is not a crack at her - I have a friend who has had to
stop sailing because his wife has scoliosis and has had multiple spinal
fusions) then she can cast off lines or hand a dockline to someone or take
the wheel while you put the anchor down or pull it up. That is where the
singlehander has a problem sometimes. But that is coastal cruising, and
not blue water.

You can go to the Bahamas in any size or type of boat (even a Hunter) if
you are sensible about picking a weather window. Sometimes people even go
in houseboats. People have circumnavigated in some pretty small boats, and
even crossed the Atlantic in rowboats. The boat isn't usually the problem,
it is the people that are the problem. The real life boat in the Perfect
Storm turned up later and it was perfectly OK. THe problem was the two
inexperienced crew panicked. That will possibly be your problem with your
girlfriend. Or maybe not.

That's my 2 cents
