Nolan,
You've asked a couple of very broad questions. Unfortunately,
there's probably not a specific answer for you.
Go visit any boat yard and look at how many *different* styles there
are. Every one of those is "just right" for someone. And every one
is horribly wrong for someone else. I guarantee you that my opinion
of the "right" 40-footer will not be the same as yours ... and I own
a 40-footer.
I strongly recommend you do some research first to narrow down your
choices. There are lots of books in print that have been written by
lots of "experts" that are loaded with advice. If you read a few,
you may be able to start filtering choices yourself. If you come
here and ask for the list opinions among three or four different
boats, you'll probably get some very good information. Come here and
ask for the "best" boat, with no other criteria, and the input will
not be of much value.
In my opinion, going to sea with a crew who is not trained and
skilled is a very big mistake. Lew's response to you was blunt.
Yes, it was an insult. Embedded in it was real advice that you
should heed.
Finally, I've been in the business of selling boats for about a dozen
years. The supply of brokerage boats world-wide is about as poor as
it's ever been. It's tough to find a good one, and when you do, it
will have a high price tag. Be prepared for that shock. Plan on
spending significant time finding the boat you've selected.
