Hello all,
Communications on board: One general rule: the more you study, the less
money you need to spend. And technology is evolving *VERY* quick, so
decisions you make today *ARE* outdated within two years. More precisely: If
sattelite communications is too expensive for you nowadays, it may very well
be affordable to you in two years time.
So first choice might be: do I start of now with the systems currently
available (hf radio), or do I wait two to four years to use the newer system
(sattelite).
If your choice is to start now with hf radio, you get a second choice:
Maritime or Ham radio. I suppose you want both (we all do).
so you can buy (choose any of )
- two gears, get two licences, etc ... . Legal, but expensive. And you
need to do all the work included in both below:
- a ham radio, new or secondhand (not too old) and "adapt" it so it can
work on Maritime bands. This works, eventough your ham radio is of "lesser
quality" than a Maritime radio. You'll also need to pass a ham radio
license: Some work involved, but a cheap license
- a Maritime radio, and "adapt" it to Ham. The radio will not work
"pleasantly" on ham bands, because it will probably show channels, whereas
everybody talks about frequencies. A channel is just a programmed frequency,
you recall the frequency by selecting the channel, like on VHF. You'll also
need to pass a licensy with little study involved, but expensive license.
My conclusion (and I'm glad to read the same from others!) start to study
for you ham license. You'll get a lot of your questions answered, and you'll
be able to make a better choice. Main problem is that ham and maritime hf
radio will be outplaced by sattelite in due time. But ham radio will persist
longer, as it is a hobby. Just like us sailors who maintain a 4000+ years
tradition, whereas merchant marine has completely gone to motor vessels
(this is by no means negative).
You might also want to check my homepage, where you can read my experiences
and some tecnical explanations. But i'm sure there's better on the internet.
One last detail ;-))) you've been watching too much films: you don't say
"over and out" but "over" which means "now you get to talk and i'll listen"
or "out" which means "now we'll both shut up". "over and out" is a
contradiction which means "you talk but shut up" ...
over.
mvg,
