The most economic way to HF is to buy a second hand HAM radio then get a
tame techo to enable the marine bands. This is illegal in Australia and many
other places but it is done and prosecutions rare. Such radios are cheaper
than second hand marine SSB/HF with multiple frequencies.

I was just about to write the same email. I sail in an area where the most
anyone seemss to have, like me, is a VHF, so getting local information is
difficult, and reading articles on sites like Sailnet and visiting other
sites devoted to marine radios just seem to make things cloudier and
cloudier. I understand there are positives and negatives to different
systems, so I just have one question:

Cruisers, if you were going to buy an HF radio system and didn't have
unlimited funds, what system would you buy today?

Thanks,
Jim
