Subject: [worldcruising] Marine radios, DSC, VHF, HF SSB HELP ME!!!!

I am trying to decide on radios for our boat. We leave in two years and
if I don't get help soon, I am sure I won't figure out all the technical
explanations before then.
Here is what I have in mind. We want to send and receive email. Access
the ham radio channels. And, of course, access the marine channels. I
have read about a HF SSB with DSC enabled. My man thinks we won't still
be able to access all the marine channels. I say we can with the right
radio.
My biggest problem is that at this point, I don't understand the
technical jargon. I know next to nothing about which bands are marine,
ham or other so telling me about frequencies and such do me no good. I
just want to know if I can get a radio that meets the majority of our
needs.
If you know of web pages that are written in English instead of
technical jargon, I would love to hear from you.
