Hi Tony

I have a ICOM 710M SSB HF radio and a VHF with Sea Phone. in my present
boat. When close to Australia I can use the sea phone that has a keypad in
the hand set. When further out I can send a message via Penta Com Stat. I
have used a Sea ray crystal HF in my last boat and that was OK with 12
channels. They will pass it on via e-mail or land line. I have used my SSB
to connect to the land line using Radphone, but that is very expensive.
Family members have kept track of my movements by ringing Russell Radio. I
keep daily radio skeds with them. Stan has passed messages on the me
occasionally. I have had contact with Russell radio as far of as Tahiti. I
have also had skeds with Mahina Radio in NZ.( their national marine radio)I
was able to get them on 4 Meg at night when I could not get anyone else. For
the trip N.Y. USA to Australia My main contacts with home have been using
internet or fax from each port of call.

Regards

barry

If you are going to get a Ham radio you can illegally convert it to use
marine channels as well.
For a trip to NZ it is good to stay in touch with Sydney Radio, Russell
Radio, and Penta Com Stat (http://www.pentacomstat.com.au/)

I think it would be easier just to add a 12.359mhz crystal to your existing
SSB ( cost about $200) then you can talk to Russell Radio 0830hrs &
1630hrs (NZ time)

Barry

Hi Barry,
what sort of communication system do you use, and, more importantly, What do
you use to talk to the folks back home?
