If you are going to get a Ham radio you can illegally convert it to use
marine channels as well.
For a trip to NZ it is good to stay in touch with Sydney Radio, Russell
Radio, and Penta Com Stat (http://www.pentacomstat.com.au/)

I think it would be easier just to add a 12.359mhz crystal to your existing
SSB ( cost about $200) then you can talk to Russell Radio 0830hrs &
1630hrs (NZ time)

sounds like you made the right move turning back
what type of boat and size do you own ?

willie

Hi Willie,
My yacht is a Duncanson 35' which is the Australian equivalent of an S&S
34'. It is category 2 for ocean racing, but this aside, the boat's SSB was
only a manual tuner with only essential safety channels. A modern auto
tuned model would have been the go. In fact, lack of communication with home
was a major factor in demoralization. A good idea would be for the wife and
I to get a HAM licence and fit the boat with a Ham radio that also had the
marine frequencies.
I carried a 406 Epirb and an 8 man liferaft included in safety features, but
what stops a new radar from going bung. My engine was low on compression,
but started reliably...... until the trip.

If there is a second attempt, I will convince my brother to come along, and
would warm up by harbour hopping up the coast a bit.
