Fishing boats safe after Mir crash

AUCKLAND (AFP) Mar 23, 2001
Tuna boats caught in the Mir space station target zone have come through the drama undamaged, New Zealand Maritime Safety Authority deputy director Tony Martin told AFP Friday.
"No boats have been hit so far as we can tell," he said.

The authority said they believed the remnants of the Mir had hit the designated area accurately over a 200-mile (125-kilometre) wide zone.

The boats, mainly American, were in contact with their owner's association in California and New Zealand authorities who have a monitoring responsibility for the area.

Some of the fishermen posted messages on a Californian website.

"Missed us here....," one named Dave reported.

"All the prayers must have worked. Pretty foggy here. Could just see a couple stars breaking through off and on. Better luck next time."

Reported Chuck: "That Thing Isn't All Down Yet We Have Pieces Going Over Us Now."

And an unnamed soul aboard Excalibur added: "We've been bending over so long kissing our bottoms goodbye it's going to take a long time to straigthen up."
