Subject: RE: [worldcruising] Volvo Diesel Question

Frankly if that happened to me I would tell them to take it back and
give me Yanmars. The Yanmars are better engines and spares are
considerably cheaper. In a "straw Pole" on one of the UK boating forums
Yanmar V Volvo Yanmar were the favourite by a 10 to 1 margin for
reliability and maintainability. Such issues as spares costs and the high
prices charged by Volvo approved agents on services carried out during the
warranty period were highly criticised. I know of one skipper who sold his
Volvo powered vessel within two years just so that he could buy a nearly
identical vessel with a Yanmar engine.
One thing I would suggest you do if accepting the Volvo's is to find out
the service costs charged by Yanmar during the warranty period and compare
it against Volvo's costs if there is a significant cost try to leverage
the diference out of the supplier. To maintain Volvo warranty you have no
option but to have the services carried out by a Volvo dealer during the
warranty period.
