Hello,
You are both right in a way.
If by tensioning the backstay the mast does not bend, you just straighten
the forestay and will flatten the sail. This happens with a stiff mast. If
on the other hand a less stiff mast gets bended by tensioning the forestay,
you ressort the inverse effect as the skipper explained.
With a modern flexible mast you have to play a lot more with tension on the
stays than we used to on older stiffer masted rigs !
Of course any system has his advantages and disadvantages ...
