Hi Paul,
We have one in our boat (36' fractional IMS sloop). Good reliable engine.
Hasn't missed a beat yet - except the starter motor seized (as they
sometimes do) but apart from that I'm very happy with it. However - spare
parts for Volvos are exorbitant - we replaced the alternator and starter
motor with standard Bosche items because of the cost. A standard Volvo
(Rhone) alternator for the MD 2030 was quoted at about $1000 AUD (Bosche
alternative, $195 AUD). Standard Volvo starter motor $1250 AUD (Bosche
alternative $285 AUD). NB - the situation may be different in Europe or the
US. If you go the Volvo route make sure you know a good marine electrician
who can source alternative parts for you. I haven't had to replace any
mechanical componants yet, but if prices on electrics are anything to go by,
make sure you change your oil and filters regularly. IMHO, spare parts could
possibly drive you into bankruptcy.
If I had to re-engine I'd consider something like a similar sized Perkins -
not because of the reliability, just because of availability (and price) of
spares.
