Question 1
Should we get an HF/SSB which can also work the amateur bands or should we
get a separate ham set.
In answer to that, it's a personal choice. Do you have two backstays or do you want to switch radios on the same antenna. With my memory I would probably transmit on the radio that was NOT connected to the antenna :-(
Question 2
What equipment are people using (Make and Model) and what is your feeling
about its reliability, efficiency etc.
I use a SGC-2000ADSP with the SGC-230 tuner. It has been road tested (boxed up and shipped to Seattle once already) so I suspect it will keep on working for quite some time now. I like the radio, once you get used to it's operation it's a dream to use. If you are used to a ham style radio, try the ICOM M710. Make sure you get the HAM enabled unit (I believe it's M710-series II). The SGC-230 tuner is probably the best tuner on the market. I would use it with whatever radio I had.
