<We used an Autohelm self steering wind vane on our last trip across the
Pacific. We were very pleased with the performance.>

<..to the conclusion that many "yachties" have no clue on how to balance
there
sail plan to reduce excessive weather helm.>

I have one of the older models with the smaller rudder on my Hans Christian
34, which is a pretty heavy boat for its size - about 11 tons. I used the
Auto-helm on my 8,000 mile trip from Long Beach, CA to Washington D.C. via
the Panama Canal. The only time it had problems was just after a storm
where the seas were large, but the wind was light, less than 10 knots
across the deck. Balancing the boat is important. I also had hooked up an
Autohelm (electric) model 2000, which had a separate compass from the drive
arm and under power this was a dream.
