Hey Gene,

It has been a while. Good to hear you are living the good life, even if it
is on the installment plan. Kind of cold up there now, yes? Your new wood
sounds pretty. Any pictures? I have remained down south for the last
couple of years, playing the odds with hurricanes. Hurricane Irene caught
Scorpion dead center summer before last, but did no damage as she rode it
out on an old Navy mooring without me. I drove north with the family
through the edge of the storm to escape it. I'm estimating that I shouldn't
get hit any more than about once every four years. If I'm wrong, maybe I'll
sail her back down to Panama and vicinity during the seasons. She knows the
way.

Young Matthew (5) and I are back on Scorpion full time now, as Major Mom has
been assigned to the middle of the Mojave Desert for the next couple of
years. She will be joining us in Nassau for a May in the Exumas cruise
before she goes back to the bad place. We thought for a minute she was
assigned to West Point, and I was getting ready to sail the Hudson River and
the rest of your home waters, but the Truth changed.

I have always liked the idea of running all the lines to the cockpit, but I
still have that wire rope halyard on the main, so as long as I have to go up
there anyway... I have not even put roller furling forward. Stuck in the
past, I guess. (Financially, at least.) I just have such a nice inventory
of sails that look and draw so well and from which I cannot part.

Let me know when you go to the Chesapeake. I just may sail up there this
summer. We hope (still) that we may get to move back into our house up
there in a couple of years.

Warmest Regards,
Larry Newlin

| Larry: Nice to hear you're "voice". As you can well imagine, I second
your
| opinion about the Bristol 35; It also has a 10'9" beam a large
comfortable
| saloon and many like mine have a 4" draft with a centerboard allowing you
to
| get into some shallow places. We've done much to upgrade both inside and
| outside. I've made teak hatches for the front "V" berth and the stern
| lazerette. I"ve weldrd an aluminum collar with perforations around the
base
| with wooden blocks attached so that all the lines can be brought yo yjr
back.
| My wife had cabinets built above side benches (sp--senior moment!) and in
the
| storage areas above each "V" berth so that there is much storage room. We
put
| on a small hatch in the saloon over head for more ventilation Last summer
we
| lived for 3 1/3 months on the boat in Sag Harbor and will be doing it
again
| this summer.
| Last summer was the first year of living on the boat and we just made
day
| trips and a trip to Block Island. This summer we'll go for a month or 2
to the
| Chesapeake, or up to Maine. I have no intention of getting any other
boat.
| In Soundimgsthis last month there were 3 35's at 35k. These are Bristol
35'
| less than '71 ( not the 35.5's).
| Larry, if your up this way. I'm on D7 in Sag Harbor. You can't miss
us
| because my wife had it painted a nice shade of yellow. We're the only
yellow
| boat in the harbor.
