Can "Rick's Rules" stand a couple of corollaries?

2. and 6. are VERY related. Clawing off a lee shore in a 32 footer
that weighs 25000 lbs is every bit as difficult as a 40 footer that
weighs the same.

Part of the basics must include the efficiency of the boat under
sail. Can it point? Can it tack? Can it hold course without
effort? Can it do all these things under adverse, storm conditions?

A well-built, proven, almost indestructible cruiser. Many are
getting a bit long in the tooth, so be very careful that they've been
well-maintained. Don't look for speed.
