Consider an Ohlson 38. The one I bought last year went around the world in
the late 1980s. Another one, Denali, was sailed around at least once by Jim
Howard, author of the excellent "Handbook of Offshore Cruising." (Althought
the book never mentions the Ohlson 38, the illustrations are of the boat.)

Richard Henderson, author and sailor, owned an Ohlson 38 which he sailed
with his family from Maryland to the Azores. ("East to the Azores")

There is a nice Ohlson 38 website developed by a German who sails his boat
on the Baltic, http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/lutz_von_meyerinck/

In addition, I scanned in Ralph Naranjo, "Classic Plastic: Ohlson 38,"
Cruising World, v.26, no. 4 (April 2000): 114. Cruising World ©2000, click
http://sites.netscape.net/evolkersz/naranjo.htm

These boats were built in the 1970s. They were built with a transom stern
or a reverse stern. The hulls were built in England. Those finished in
England have fiberglass cabin trunks, others finished in Germany and/or
Sweden may have a teak trunk.

These boats do not come on the market very often. In the past year a
top-of-the-line Ohlson 38 was for sale for $95,000. However, when I was
looking there were fixer-uppers in the $29-45,000 range.

A helpful book to assess qualities of a seaworthy boat is John Vigor's "The
Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat: A Guide to Essential Features, Gear, and
Handling." (International Marine, 1999). Vigor's informative and
interesting small book "Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere" limits
size from 20" to 32' feet. The articles first appeared in "Good Old Boat."
