Hello,
First of all, my experiences on this mainly date back to 1995, and I am
wondering how much everything has changed.
> Nets seem to come and go on a regular basis.
Very much true. I even had my own "Flemish MM net" during my Atlantic round
about on 14308 Mhz with 1 boat (me) and some 20 flemish house-bound ham's.
This was a bit an offspin of the very inofficial Flemish traveler's net on
the same frequency, led by Kamiel (ON4ACM), at irregular times and
frequencies, which still goes on.
> I am particularly interested in how much more common Marine SSB cruising
nets are vs Ham nets.
Except for the VAX498 weather round, I have not heard of any regular Marine
SSB cruising net on an transatlantic scale, but I am not very much up to
date on that. There used to be a Dutch net every Saturday morning when I
crossed back towards Europe, but that was stopped when everybody had arrived
that year.
Another issue is that mainly "Romanic Europeans" use/used ham radio gear
without license off-band (just below 14000 or just above 14350) or 120 band
CB gear.
To conclude, I think ham nets are very much more common, but I would like to
hear your opinion on this. Have you considered studying the effect of
sattelite communications on this ? Lately, I see mainly the French (those
same "Romanic Europeans" which used to ... see above ?) leave with Inmarsat
systems.
and thanks for the list to Dave, I'm just sorry I can't hear any of the
stations here in ON. Maybe I just have to leave off again ...
mvg,
