Subject: [worldcruising] Caribbean Marinas

We have been in the Caribbean for 6 years now. Please consider
leaving your boat south of 12 degrees 40 minutes. This is the line
between St. Vincent and Carriacou. In fact most
insurance companies (Lloyds, Pantenaeus etc.) require that the
boat be south of 12o40' during hurricane season 1 Jun through
1 Nov or you are not covered in the event of damage from a named
windstorm (hurricane). We have used the Moorings base in Secret
Harbour, Grenada for several years. It has a large concrete dock
with about 45 slips. Last year a new yard opened
in St. Davids, Grenada which has a well done storage yard for
about 200 boats on the hard. It is on the web as Grenada Marine.

I haven't used them yet so cannot attest to the service.
Secret Harbour or Mount Hartman Bay (you won't find a prettier place
anywhere in the Caribbean) which is where the Moorings are
takes about 10 minutes by cab from the Grenada International
airport or Pt Salines airport. They have a restaurant, hotel and a
couple of bars. Happy hour at the Rum Squall from 1700 to 1800 with
half price Carib. Coming from or to the UK BA has
daily flights via Barbados and another option through Tobago.
We also hire a local fellow, a former Moorings
Captain named Rock Charles to look after the boat. He drives
a taxi out of the Moorings base and so is there all the time. He
airs it out, runs the engine and gen, checks the bilge etc. If
there is a storm coming (such as Lenny a year ago) he also removes
the canvas, doubles up on warps and so on.
The manager at the Moorings base is MaryAnn Hambly (a Brit) and
she can be reached at (473) 444-4439. Customs and Immigration is
just behind the Moorings office. With your blue book in hand Island
Water World at Grenada Marine will give duty free prices. IWW is
also opening another store on the Carenage in St. Georges in April.
Good provisioning is about 15 minutes by cab or bus.
The only navigation problems are Tara Island, the Porpoises and finding
your way in throught the reef. All are charted but remember Grenada
is red right returning. The reefs are buoyed but be careful as it is
not unknown for the buoys to disappear.
Look us up when you arrive. OverStreet is us.
Hope this helps. If you have other questions please send us a note
at dave@XXX.XXX

Dave Richardson

I would like to leave our 50 foot sailboat at a secure and attractive
marina in the southern Caribbean throughout June and the early part
of July whilst we fly back to the UK. Does anyone have any
recommendations? Rodney Bay in St Lucia looks the most likely but it
is a long two hour taxi ride from the International Airport.
Has anyone experience of marinas in St Vincent or Grenada (the new
facility called Grenada Marine seems to deal only with haul outs and
I want to leave the boat in the water so she can be used by friends
from time to time)
We would also like to spend some time cruising Dominica ... any
recommendations, good anchorages, places not to miss?
