[worldcruising] possibility of a ground loop

Hi!

I have a Perkins Prima M50 diesel that I installed on my boat in 1994.
During last summers cruise the starter failed. After many calls I found that
my alternatives were - purchase a new replacement starter from Perkins for
$600 (US) or try and rebuild the old one. The Prima series of Perkins
engines have an isolated negative ground system where the block is not
directly grounded until the ignition key is on which activates a grounding
relay. The theory is that this will eliminate stray currents and prevent
electrolysis in the engine. I finally got the starter rebuilt but now I wan
to carry a spare just in case it fails again.

I think that I found a replacement after market starter for the engine for
$150. The price deference is because the Perkins replacement starter has a
geared drive and the after market replacement is a direct drive. Besides
having a much larger motor, the after market replacement does not have an
isolated ground.

Here is the question - can defeating the ground isolation with the after
market starter set up a ground loop that can burn up the engine circuits?

Any help will be much appreciated.
