Subject: [worldcruising] Mast steps

I am planning to install permanent, folding mast steps so I can climb my
mast. Any suggestions on brands, spacing, installation? I already have a
block and tackle with a bosun's chair to go up the mast.
Jim Howard, in Handbook of Offshore Cruising, p. 53, suggests that one
should have both mast steps and a bosun's chair, and that neither is a fun
way to go up the mast. Howard strung some light line between his mast steps
and the upper shrouds to keep halyards from fouling.
Does anyone know how Ellen MacArthur got up the mast of 'Kingfisher'
recently in the Southern Ocean during the Vendee Globe race to clear a sail
from a spreader? I have not seen a clear description of it and there are no
details on her web page, www.ellenmacarthur.com.
Practical Sailor recently rated the ATN TopClimber very highly, a clever
variant on the bosun's chair. (Available at a discount from Defender.)
Practical Sailor previously rated the Fastep mast steps, which can be
inserted in pre-drilled holes in the mast. The idea of going up the mast
with a number of steps that need to be inserted while you are bobbing back
and forth, or pounding, does not appeal to me. At the Atlantic City Boat
Show Alfred Gilbert, the inventor, said I would probably make two trip just
to put them all in. And I suppose two trips to take them all down, hoping
that none fall on deck or in the water.
