There is a need for teachers in the Cook Islands, Kiribati and Tonga, mainly
in outer islands. They need maths and science as well. but you would only
get local wages which are nearly zero and no facilities.
It takes a bit of getting used to accepting local behaviour in schools. Like
corporal punishment. They beat the shit out of offenders. Quite different to
Western values.

Subject: [worldcruising] Teaching English

Every week the educational supplement of The Guardian (one of the UK's
better newspapers) carries a page or so of adverts for people required to
teach English in various countries - anywhere from Japan to the Gulf states
to Europe. And obtaining a teaching English as a foreign language type
qualification is relatively straightforward - about a one month's intensive
course.

So, I've started to wonder if this would be a reasonable way for someone
living the cruising life to make a living - or at least supplement the
cruising kitty. I envisage something like fixing up a 3-6 month teaching
post through some sort of agency, sailing to the appropriate location and
living on the boat while going to the teaching job each day.

I guess it would be easier if the job were fairly near the harbour but a bit
of commuting might not be unreasonable - eg. commuting into Tokyo or
whatever from some attractive little Japanese fishing village within fast
train ride of the city.

Quite apart from the financial aspect, it strikes me that this would also be
a good way to get to know the people - absorb the culture.

I'd be grateful for you thoughts and comments on this idea. I'd particularly
like to hear from anyone who is actually doing this, has done or it or knows
someone who has.

Also, does anyone know if places in the Caribbean or the Pacific have a
similar requirement for English teachers?

Thanks

John
