The Raytheon chartplotter units are all running embedded Windows
OS, and they quite honestly don't crash and they have nothing to
get "corrupted" as the OS is burned into EPROMs inside.
Instability of Operating Systems on PCs is usually due to
improper device drivers, mismatched subcomponents (all the .DLL's
thrown in the mix by shareware & competing commercial developers)
and the death stroke - improper shutdown leading to physical
corruption of the OS files.
The embedded systems are safe from all that. There are plenty of
medical devices in hospitals that run on embedded Windows OS, but
to be certifiable for that type of use they must be
"unreconfigurable" so that nobod can mess with them. They are,
and they work.
The reason that Linux machines don't have problems as commonly is
simple. It takes a bit more forethought to develop an application
and nobody loads shared .DLLs for applications on UN*X.
Coincidentally, I have a Raytheon RayChart 520 with HSB (dual
station radar/chart capability) that I'm about to sell on Ebay.
Email me if you're interested in a deal.

The GPS systems that I know are not based in Win OS. Their are
using
programed in code or "c"
I did nos ask about GPS alone. My question was about the dedicated
chart
plotters like Simrad which get the input from a GPS.
Cheers
