RE: [worldcruising] relying on GPS

When sailing near the equator I was worried by the constant display of
lightning around the boat.
I lightning hit near the boat all electrics could be wiped out. So in
addition to my built in GPS with an external aerial I carried a spare hand
held GPS in the abandon ship bag along with the hand held VHF. I also had a
hand held GPS stored in a metal tool box to try and avoid lightning damage.
I did have a plastic Davis sextant and tables just in case all else failed
though.

Perhaps the operating systems used for the GPS satellites themselves are
using Win 95 or Win 98? I would strongly urge you to reconsider alternatives
to relying solely on GPS for navigation.
Just some food for thought.

  Hi,
As we know there are two common ways in having an electronic chart
plotter on board. One is based on using a PC or laptop and the other
based on a dedicated chart plotter.

My experience with the failure in Win 95 and Win 98 is making me very
nervous on using just the software on a laptop.

What is the reliability of the dedicated chart plotters using C-Map?

My intention is not to rely only on the electronics, so I will carry
some paper charts however I am not planning to use a sextant based on
  my experience on GPS system

  Appreciate any inputs.
