Lex, I have hit (not run into) some 10 or 11 countries this year and have
not yet found that an "official seal" is required. We have one and I have
used it on a couple of occasions in countries where bureaucracy abounds but
it wasn't a requirement. It might help to make things look more "official"
but so does a typed crew list.

Our boat is registered as an "offshore corporation" as our citizenships
make registration in our country of residence impossible. We have a
"corporate
seal" which would be required were we conducting any corporate business
including such things as selling the boat. I suspect this is were the
source of the heresay you mentioned.

The seal itself is a simple round oblisk which fits into a plier type affair
that allows you impress the seal information into paper. Just about any
stationer will get one made up for you for $25 or so. If you want to
impress
folks buy a package of either red or gold seals which go on the paper first
and then use the seal to crimp your mark on top of these. Then everyone
will think you are a lawyer and won't mess with you. Or if they don't like
lawyer types they will tie you up in red tape forever.

A simple ink pad stamp with basic ships information will help when you need
to fill out forms from 1. Customs 2. Immigration 3. Port Captain 4.
Agriculture
5. Police and 6. Coast Guard. I may have forgotten someone here. Usually
they
have a specific order that you must visit them in. Invariably you will be
wrong and then one of them will be upset. The forms all ask for the same
information and are usually required in 4 copies.

The information required on the crew list changes from country to country.
I now have just about everything listed on ours and keep it on my PC
changing
only the crew identities when we have guests aboard. I can send you a copy
if
you are interested. Put everything in dual measures (Imperial and Metric).
Crew changes only get tricky when they are flying into one country and then
flying out of another. You need to get this covered by immigration on exit
and entry of the respective countries.

Clearing in and out of Ireland this year was simply great. I phoned Paddy
O'Flaherty at the local HRH Customs Office. I tried to give Paddy our
information. He didn't want it. He wished us a good vacation. I persisted
by asking him if there wasn't some form to fill out or someone else to call.

He asked if I had a reason for asking and again wished us a good vacation.
I didn't realize until later that the pub was opening and he was late.

Regards
Dave Richardson
