[worldcruising] Cruising the South Coast of Australia

I have followed with great interest, the discussion on which direction to
leave the shores of Australia and at what time of the year.
I have very little to add, yet feel compelled to, as this discussion should
be encouraged.
Portland is an excellent harbour. The Alluminum smelter has lights that can
be seen for miles. The safest entry is from the Melbourne side, as is the
case for Port Fairy. I have entered Port Campbell once and would not
recommend this port due to the dangerous placings of the cray pots. Apollo
Bay is a bit tricky and should be approached from the shoreside of the
entrance to the harbour in heavy seas.
I would love to get as far as Robe one day.

I would stand as far offshore as possible unless I had some local knowledge
about a place worth closing in to and, even then, I would be reluctant to
be close in unless the wind was from the northeast or north. After that it
will just about always back around to the west and the southwest so you
would be on a lee shore (and a very inhospitable one at that).

Regards

Lex
