[] I don't have world-cruising experience, but I can agree with Jim M.'s comments about fear-mongering. It may be that the piracy topic lends itself to that.

Comments about crime in the U.S. fall in the same category, too. The truth of the matter is that most people who do not live in high-poverty areas are subject to violent crime only at the hands of friends and acquaintences. Thus, most sailors, including myself, are really at low risk for murder, rape, etc.

That's not to say crime doesn't occur, only that harping on it as if it were an omnipresent threat may be more fearmongering than reality.

Just my $.02 worth....
