To flesh it out a bit, I think we were in a better situation than most to
assess the dangers from piracy when we on Guam. For 5 years I ran a nightly
Ham radio net for cruisers and regularly participated in Indian Ocean and So
Pac nets as well. Word travelled fast on the coconut telegraph and if
somebody got cheated on a SS welding job in Maloolooba, we'd all hear about
it.
Sure, boats went missing every now and then. But there was only that single
incident of people being killed. Even many of those who dropped out and
were thought lost eventually popped back up onto the radar screen or got
reported on by someone--swallowed the anchor in Indonesia or the PI, spent a
month or two at Ant Atoll in the FSM, abandoned the boat and flew home.
