Our experience was similar. No real/verifiable reports of serious crime
against yachts during 4 years of cruising in the Mediterranean, the North
and South Atlantic, including 6 months in that hot bed of "piracy"
northeast Brazil. I really dislike web-sites that attempt to profit by
spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) regarding this subject.

Certainly there are some areas to stay clear of in both the 1st and 3rd
world, but most of this talk about crime directed at yachts is, in my view,
vastly over-stated. Even crime against merchant shipping is minuscule when
one considers that on any given day it is estimated that there are
approximately 16,000 ships at sea, with a similar number sitting in ports
around the world.

Nicely put, Rick.
