I read every 1/4 of many people in the Ocean Cruising Club sailing both the
Red Sea and Cape
routes. Like many pirate prone areas I think the idea is to stay well out to
sea when passing through the Red Sea. There are definite cruising advantages
and interesting ports of call.

The problem with the cape route is the leg from Durbin to the Cape. It is
one of the worst ares of sea.
After the cape it seems popular to visit the South Atlantic Islands of St
Helna, Ascension , Cape Verde and the Azores. This avoids the African
Continent. There are some how ever who are brave enough to call into the
West African main land. I think Namibia and Angola may be safe enough. On
the way to Durbin the East African coast has a safe Marina at Kilifi in
Kenya (Swynford Boatyard) and Zanzibar is a must in Tanzania.

Regards

Barry

Hi all,

We are considering going via the Cape of Good Hope on our route to
the UK. As we'll be on a budget, the prospect of continual headwinds
and the possibility of pirates has, at this stage, ruled out taking
the red sea route. Does anyone have opinions they would like to
share regarding the choice between the red sea and the cape of good
hope? Open to suggestions.....

Also, I am curious as to where most cruisers go after cape town.
Many americans seem to head for brazil, then the carribean before
heading home; which route do the europeans among us prefer?

dreaming of clear blue seas....
all the best
Jo
