A solent head sail is set on a inner head stay just inches aft of the mail genoa headstay. This differs form a stay sail which would be placed back almost halfway to the mast. On a boat with a solent jib the genoa must be furled to tack the boat as there is little clearance between the two stays. The solent is often set up to be self tacking.
