Subject: RE: [worldcruising] Mast winter storage on boat

I'd pad the rails fore and aft and use them for support and then rig a deck
stepped central post or crossbeam to support the middle section.
Speaking of masts, however, just saw a really frightening thing at a
rigger's shop this weekend. He had a big mast off that was split longways
from the heel in the bilge to about 2 ft above the coach roof. The owner
had not attended to ensuring that the mast drained. Instead, it sat flush
on the heel plate in the bilge, compressed into a piece of wood that formed
a perfect seal. A 5 ft length of mast filled with rainwater and when it
froze, the mast split like a ripe banana.
