Subject: RE: [worldcruising] Building material question...

Hello all,
<snip>
i believe they are refering to epoxy resin instead
of vinylester or polyester and the core is foam
instead of balsa or plywood.. would love to hear
if my answers to this quiz are correct?
</snip>
I agree with paul on this subject. Would also love to hear if I won the
quiz. This method is just as good as any other. This is a way
(wind-)surfboards are made.
Boards/boats can be made of polyester resign, glass/carbon/kevlar/... fibre
and polyurethane foam as a filling, or epoxy resign, any fibre and
polystirene or polyurethane foam. Never mix polystirene foam with polyester,
or the foam will melt away. I just hope I haven't already mixed it up, it's
a bit far away...
The foam is there for some reasons: you can make a thick hull (=stiffness)
without the weight. It is an insulator. And in the case of our famous
Belgian "Etap" yachts: it makes their boats unsinkable. But the hull gets so
thick it fills up the lockers.
Different fibers have different properties. The vast majority of "plastic"
sailing yachts has been built with glassfiber (including mine). I believe
other fibers are still only used for racing yachts, or for "upper market"
boats. But I hear of the use of twaron on some of the more popular wharfs in
Europe. Twaron is then used in conjunction with glassfibre, just on the
crucial parts of the boat. You'll find carbon used like that on some
series-built boats as well.
I think the main thing that the add wants to tell you is the usage of epoxy
over polyester resign, which shows some advantages: remember you put an
epoxy layer on a polyester boat to prevent osmosis. Epoxy is also
mechanically stronger than polyester, especially for "point-stress"
(???=dutch: puntbelasting). Disadvantage for use of epoxy in construction is
it's higher price.
I sail a fibreglass boat. An english saying: "If god would have wanted us to
sail fibreglass boats, he would have grown fibreglass trees". But I'm
dreaming of an aluminium boat ! I am used to more logic in my life, but
then, isn't sailing about "the feeling of life" ;-) ?.
