Subject: RE: [worldcruising] About South America

Hello all,
Thanks for your reactions on my questions in the list. I did already sail
around the Atlantic once, the classical trip to the Carribean, some 6 years
ago (see my website for the story). As the boat doesn't get sold, I might as
well do another trip with it.
Next trip is planned in 2003-2004. I would leave august 2003, like to cross
from Canaries (stop in Cabo Verde ?) to Recife (Brazil) in late
october/November, continue south to arrive Magalan street in
january/february, sail back north then (has someone ever sailed the whole
stretch from Buenos Aires to Acores in 1 leg ??? how did it go ???) and come
back to Europe august 2004. The whole thing can be delayed or fastened, but
always by a (or multiple) year(s).
That would be some 18.000 Nm in one year, or an average of 2 days sailing
out of every three. My atlantic trip was 10.000 nm or 1 day sailing out of
three. But I can shorten the trip and not sail very much south, if I get
scared (weather) or charmed (...) ;-)
Main problems on that trip as I see them now are (any sugestions on this ?)
- sailing south into the Malvinas channel (counter current)
- sailing north from Uruguay to Recife (counter current)
I sail an old 31 ft, my average is around 100 Nm in 24 hours (like everybody
?)

</quote>
The only thing I did not understand here is "cachorro". What animal is that
? There has been much discussion in this list about cats and dogs on board,
and I even think it has been banned as a subject once, due to ... . But I've
come across sailors with both dogs and cats, all very happy about it. Those
who aren't happy about it usually don't take pets with them (now how's that
for some logic ?). One Belgian used to sail around the world with a
three-legged blind dog who was very good at watch-keeping (he smelled other
boats!), but I've heard the dog is dead now.
The main problem with cats seems to be that they cannot be trained to stay
on board, so some do disappear in the ocean (read Naomi James for one story
of this ...). Dogs tend to need more attention, and are more noisy. A
classical Holland breeded dog is the "schipperke", small hairy dogs
especially for use on (inland) boats. I personally do not think of taking
any animal on board. And as I have no "tripulação", I need no "mascote" ;-)

Jan Bruggeman
