[worldcruising] Knowing only one language

Subject: [worldcruising] Knowing only one language

My cruising was in Central America. I didn't know Spanish, but my (ex-)Wife
a little bit, so I relied on her. This worked fine until she flew back to
the U.S. to help build our cruising kitty, and all of a sudden (and after
more than two years) I need to know the language. I was amazed at how
quickly you can pick a language up when you have too. I could never talk in
detail to someone, but I never went hungry or without a beer :>}

One day I was looking at some signs in a store window, and was startled
when I couldn't read them - after all I should have known that much
Spanish. A few minutes later I realized why I couldn't read them -- they
were in English.
