It would depend on your definition of
"successfully". Possible? Sure. Many have done it.
However, (with one exception) I have found that *attempting* even a few
words of the language you find yourself confronted with usually makes a
difference. Backed up even a bit of goodwill/humor, you will be amazed at
the positive reception this generates.
