When we do Sydney Hobarts and Melbourne Hobarts Lee Sheets are
a must. I use a rectangle cloth about 2/3 the bunk length.
They are attached along the bottom edge every 3" and each top corner tied by
a cord to a strong
cleat on bulkheads or other strong points.
There is a difficulty if there is a double bed as two sheets are needed. One
each. I have
tied the bottom edge with short lines through holes in the mattress.
I have sailed with lee boards but in a big sea you can get thrown out over
the boards.
Lee cloths are more likely to hold you down. I have had to strap my self in
with a safety harness to stop myself being thrown from one side of the cabin
to the other.
This restraint is better with a rectangle sheet compared to a triangle
sheet.
I have bought ready made sheets from Westmarine and I have made sheets from
old sails.

Subject: [worldcruising] Lee Cloths
Some time ago I posted a message regarding Lee Cloths. I did receive one
response but due to time constraints did not go ahead with the installation.
I now have time to install these and are seeking some more comments from
experienced cruisers as to what is the best material, shape, size etc and how
best to attach to the bulkheads, headliner etc. The options I have thought
of are:
1. A triangular piece of material fixed to the bunk and supported with a
rope to the deckhead.
2. A rectangular piece of material fixed to the bunkbase and supported with
a rod attached to bulkheads either end. (could be uncomfortable when
leaning against)
3. A solid board (difficult to store and make strong enough)
Any opinions/suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in anticipation of a
reply
