Hi Chris. I am also considering the Cape Horn for my Southern Cross 39
("Sonsie" - Bellingham WA). I was in San Diego last week and stopped by
Downwind Marine (619) 224-2733. I got in a discussion with some of their
staff about wind vanes, in particular the Cape Horn, and they recommended
it highly. The only downside I have ever heard was about the below-decks
control cables. Someone mentioned to me some time back that they might be
hard to access if one broke. Good point, but I think I'm still going to go
with the Cape Horn. I talked to Yves Gelinas, the
designer/owner/manufacturer of the Cape Horn, a couple of months ago about
the installation situation on my particular vessel, and he mentioned he had
just returned from Vancouver where he was installing a unit. Perhaps we
could double up an installation project on our two boats and get him out to
assist. Anyway, if you have any questions about the Cape Horn I wouldn't
hesitate to call him. My conversation with him was very informative and
helpful. His number: 1-800 CAP HORN. Keep in touch and let me know what
you decide to do. BTW, we'll be following your wake down the west coast
about a year after you. Our plans are to head to the Marquesas and the
South Pacific from San Diego in the spring of '02.
Fair winds!
Doug
