Subject: Re: [worldcruising] Any problems with OceanPC computers?

I have elected to go with a similar set-up on my Southern Cross 39. I am
building a wooden case to hold and protect my HP 8760C CPU tower under the
nav station table (faces aft at bottom starboard side of companionway
ladder). Will mount a 15" LCD flat-screen monitor on the bulkhead above
the nav table. Though I have a 1,500 watt inverter aboard I am considering
a small 300 watt inverter to supply power to just the CPU as it would be a
very clean power source which is important. Am also thinking about
installing an uninterruptable battery back-up power supply to guard against
power "blinks" which are not uncommon with any boat's 12 volt house power
system. I am more concerned about overheating problems with the CPU in
tropical climates, due to high ambient temperatures, rather than humidity,
etc., so I am going to install additional cooling fans both internally and
externally to keep a good flow of air moving through it. I have been using
a Micron Transporter XPE laptop aboard for about 4 years but can see no
advantage to using a laptop over a standard desktop computer. However, I
will carry the laptop as a back-up computer should the main computer pack
it in. I am going to re-initialize it and reinstall all software fresh,
then seal it up in a moisture tight container such as a Pelican case.
Given that you already own 3 computers I would suggest mounting one as the
primary CPU and then moth balling a second one and carrying it as a back-up.
