Could you describe the check stays a bit more? Where are your attachment points? Am I correct in thinking these are essentially running backstays? If so, would they do the trick if a stormjib were flown off the inner forestay?

Just adding my two penneth worth. I have a removable inner forestay that is
a good support for the masthead spinnaker, and have 12mm braided nylon as
check stays. these are usually taped to the lowers until needed. In use.
they are attached to the spinnaker tackle for tensioning.
